
International Conference – International Law in the Face of War

On July 23, 2022, the International Scientific Conference “International Law in the Face of War” was held at the Tbilisi Marriott Hotel, co-organized by the European University Institute of Law and the Embassy of France in Georgia.
The conference focused on one of the most pressing issues in contemporary international law—the ongoing war in Ukraine and its legal assessment under international law. It was intended for legal professionals as well as experts in public policy working on this subject.
The event was opened by Ioseb Kelenjeridze, Director of the Law Institute. Opening remarks were delivered by Diégo Colas, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of France to Georgia, and Nino Taliashvili, Rector of European University.
The conference featured presentations by:
- Rostane Mehdi – Professor at Aix-Marseille University, Associate Professor of Public Law, Specialist in EU Law, and Director of the School of Political Studies in Aix.
- Anne Hamonic – Professor of European Law at Rennes 1 University, Researcher at the West Institute (IODE).
- Kaupo Känd – Director of The Hague Tribunal's Tbilisi Office.
- Nino Nikolaishvili – Head of the Department of State Representation in International Courts, Ministry of Justice of Georgia.
- Khatuna Bourkadze – Professor, Business and Technology University.
- Meri Kothlamazachvili – Advisor to the Public Defender of Georgia on Human Rights Issues in Conflict-Affected Regions.
The conference was attended by legal experts, academics, government officials, members of parliament, representatives of the Public Defender’s Office, diplomats, and civil society organizations. Participants had the opportunity to analyze global military conflicts from a legal perspective and discuss potential solutions.
During the event, the European University Institute of Law also presented its scientific journal, “Comparative Criminal Law”.
