Strasbourg International Institute of Human Rights conducted first training course in the South Caucasus
From 16 to 20 October 2017, European University Institute of Law hosted the Strasbourg International Institute of Human Rights during its first outreach visit to the South Caucasus.
The opening ceremony was attended by Pascal Meunier, French Ambassador to Georgia, along with embassy attachés, members of the Georgian Parliament, and representatives from the Office of the Prosecutor General and the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Among the invited lecturers were: Rick Leveson - Professor of Law School at Leiden University (Netherlands), Antoine Madeleine - Director of the International Federation of Human Rights, Antoine Kabore - University of Manchester, Zuzana Kovalova - expert of UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
They provided participants with comprehensive training on international human rights standards.
Participants included students from multiple Georgian universities, including European University, JIPA, International Black Sea University and Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, as well as representatives from the Ombudsman’s office, judges, lawyers, and other legal professionals from Georgia, Turkey, Ukraine, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. At the end of the course, the participants of the project were tested and received certificates confirming their achievements.
Tbilisi State University student Esma Gumberidze, who achieved the highest score, became the winner of the project. In 2018, she will travel to Strasbourg to attend a one-month lecture course.
The event was organized by the European University Institute of Law. The program supporters were the European University, the French Embassy in Georgia and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
As the Ambassador of France to Georgia, Pascal Menie said the Strasbourg International Institute of Human Rights, who visited Georgia for the first time, is a very essential organization in France. He expressed hope that the cooperation between the Institute and European University would be fruitful.
